AP English Language: Introduction to Rhetoric





For today's class, we will be jumping into argumentation--first, by reviewing the rhetorical triangle, including audience, purpose, speaker, and persona and then, by applying what we have learned to a Super Bowl ad from 2013.

In the comments section below, answer the following questions:

1) Who is the speaker in "God Made a Farmer?" Describe them as clearly as you can. Remember: there is a difference between saying, "the speaker is John Smith" and "the speaker is John Smith, cross-country legend and first man to run a four and a half minute mile."

2) What/who is the persona the speaker is projecting?

3) Who is the audience for this commercial?

4) What is the commercial's subject and purpose?

For Homework tonight:
Complete one says/does journal entry on "God Made a Farmer."  You may also wish to select a few of your favorite quotes from Funny or Die's version to help emphasize your points.  Due in class tomorrow.  When you are done, read the handout, "Annotation Guidelines" you received in class today.

  1. This video demonstrates the work that a farmer does and lives through. It also demonstrates some of the rewards of all of the work. It repeats the words "so God made a farmer" by doing, so it draws the conclusion that farmers are an important.

  5. This video uses a poem written by Paul Harvey to show how the idea of the american farmer is one who is strong, caring, and willing to continue when things aren't going well.

  6. It seems interesting that they show kids wanting to follow in their father's footsteps. Maybe they wanted it seem like something appealing that people would want to do all their lives.

  7. I noticed a strong juxtaposition between the pathos in the statements about the colt and the meadowlark, and the pathos of a different kind in the rest of the statements about hard working farmers.

  8. I find it interesting how they list the chores/work of farmers in a way that even people who know nothing of farming can appreciate the profession. At the same time it is done in a way that can be related to in order to increase the effectiveness of the as.

  9. I find it interesting how everything looks and sounds old fashioned. I also find it interesting how they show how strong and dedicated a farmer is. I think it does this to make the farmers that are watching the commercial feel good about themselves, and then carry this feeling when they see the car. At the end, it appeals to an emotional sense when the kid wants to be like his dad.

  12. The Ad didn't feel corporate, it felt like it was a heart to heart(The speaker had a very calm voice.)

  13. I didn't find anything in the ad to be particularly interesting or particularly unique, however the ad did use common methods of persuasion well. It showed the level of work in a way understandable to the general public. It also repeated the phrase "so god made a farmer" allowing the message of farmers are hard worker to be ingrained into the mind of the audience.

  14. This does a good job at showing a lifestyle that many aren't accustomed to and don't understand, but it doesn't accurately represent all farmers lifestyles. They go to extremes to sell their product, which in itself is disrespectful to those who have either less or more. As small as it is they are putting a large group of people into a small box.

    2. The persona is someone who respects and seems knowledgeable about farmers.
    3.This commercial has an audience of all of the people who watched it, but is targeted at farmers and their families.
    4.The subject is how hardworking farmers are, and the purpose is to convince farmers and their families to purchase a Chrysler truck.

    2. The persona is somebody who really gets what farmers do and respects the work they do and just generally cares.
    3. The audience is the people who are going to buy the trucks, but specifically farmers and people who respect farmers.
    4. The commercials subject is farmers and the work they do, and it's purpose is to sell some brand of truck.

    1) The speaker is the narrator who is speaking for the Chrysler company
    2) The persona the narrator is projecting is depicted as someone who has a lot of faith and respect in the idea of the American farmer.
    3) The audience is anyone who identifies as a hard worker or with the idea of a farmer, or people who are likely to purchase trucks.
    4) The subject was the poem by Paul Harvey, "God Made a Farmer." The purpose was to sell trucks for Chrysler.

  21. 1. The speaker is Paul Harvey. However, the company Ram used this speech in a way that was not intended by Harvey, so in this way there is a double speaker.
    2. The speaker is projecting a humble and hardworking farmer.
    3. The audience is for people that live in rural areas or are farmers. Even though everyone watching the Super Bowl will see it, it is targeted towards farmers.
    4. The subject of this is farmers and the jobs they have to do. The purpose is to make farmers feel proud of their hard work and convince them to buy a truck.
