Honors Composition: Introduction to Rhetoric




For today's class, we will be jumping into argumentation--first, by reviewing the rhetorical triangle, including audiencepurposespeaker, and persona and then, by applying what we have learned to a Super Bowl ad from 2013.

In the comments section below, answer the following questions:

1) Who is the speaker in "God Made a Farmer?" Describe them as clearly as you can. Remember: there is a difference between saying, "the speaker is John Smith" and "the speaker is John Smith, cross-country legend and first man to run a four and a half minute mile."

2) What/who is the persona the speaker is projecting?

3) Who is the audience for this commercial?

4) What is the commercial's subject and purpose?

  7. It's definitely targeting farmers by showing how hard their jobs are. It is also using the difficult work farmers do to its advantage by making it seem as though farmers prefer the truck, so that others think it is good

  10. The commercial shows snapshots of different farmers, showing that the world is diverse. The commercial also shows people hard at work or taking care of children and small animals to evoke a feeling from the audience this is pathos. The commercial also plays what sounds like an authoratative voice. The truck is also not featured in all the photos, giving the feeling that this is not an add, it is a part of life.

    3. The audience of the commercial could be the american people, as American heritage is tied closely with farming. The end of the commercial says "to the farmer in us all", which indicates this.
    4. The subject is farmers and the purpose is to sell trucks.

  22. "To the farmer in all of us" seems like they are trying to communicate that everyone complex and has character traits that are polar opposites. So the truck you should get is the truck that is made for everyone

    There appears to be a lot of alliteration, as well as repetition of "so god made a farmer".

    Deeperly, there always appeared to be the idea of a farmer being strong and mighty directly adjacent to how soft, and gentle he is using images such as children. Seems to be pathos.

  24. Mainly Pathos for arguments. Since the purpose of the commercial is to convince its viewers to buy the truck, it uses images and words that many potential truck-buying people will aspire to. It also attempts to convince those who hadn't considered buying a truck to go do so.

    The persona the man is portraying is a man who either is a farmer or has a strong belief in the need of farmers. He also appears to be someone who is very hardworking.

    The subject is farmers and trucks, the purpose was to convince the audience as to why a purchase of a truck is a good purchase.

    2) The persona is a hard working farmer, who is both caring enough to take care of many animals and save wounded animals, and hard enough to work every day at length to care for his animals, crops, and provide food and a good living for him and his family. He is extremely hard working and dedicated to his craft.
    3) The audience of this commercial is likely any American, as we have a very hard working, agricultural, rural past. It speaks to the "rugged individualism" that Americans feel defines our country and distinguishes us from other nations. It is to speak to the "hard working rugged individual" that many people feel that they have within them.
    4) The subject of the video is farming and a hard agricultural life. This video exclusively talks about how hard farmers have to work to be successful. In addition, the purpose of the video is to sell trucks. The commercial does this by trying to speak to "the farmer in all of us" and trying to strike an emotional, patriotic chord with the audience. This is likely a pathos appeal, as it fills the listener with a sense of pride for the US and inspires them to work hard, potentially.

    2. The persona projected by the speaker is someone who resonates with the American farming values. Someone who is hard-working and values his/her family and work the most. A character who many Americans can identify with.

    3. The audience of the commercial is farmers and anyone who identifies with the values of American farmers and their hard life that the speaker shows in the video.

    4.The subject of the commercial is the American farmer. The purpose is to persuade the audience of buying a truck by using pathos since it is emotionally appealing and engages with the emotions of the audience.
