What about Us?: Time to Think about the Other Side of All These Technology Debates
What's the whole story of students and technology? It's your time to share and convince the class of new ideas! |
Homework for Friday, Sept. 1, 2017:
Find one convincing article, video, essay,
speech, or other media (e.g., podcast, YouTube commentary) that
combats/debates/proves the other side of any part of the arguments we have been
discussing the last two weeks. Since our theme has been technology, we have
looked at the ways a lot of researchers argue against the same thing: smart
phones—and technology more generally—are destroying the next generation.
Everything from attention spans to self-worth crumbles the second young people put “dangerous”
devices into their hands.
But are smartphones,
touch screens, and computers truly “dangerous?” Or is the story more complex?
Do electronic devices open new worlds and ideas that never existed before? Do they create new languages? Art? Ideas? It’s
your job to show the other side of the story for Monday’s class. Depending on
what we find, we may choose to spend several class periods reading and analyzing
these texts (with the possibility of a socratic circle!). So, bring your best
research and your best argument Monday. Let’s
hear what the other side has to say!
